Jay Park, “I’m confident to make a debut in America within two years”

Posted Image

Jay Park’s comeback as a solo and promotions were successful. His expulsion from 2PM and the related problems that made Korea noisy last year took away the light from this talented man. But the Jay Park that came back after a year was relatively calm.

He gained a passable mark in terms of quality for his trendy pop-style tracks of Take a Look Back’Take A Deeper Look’ (the journalist made a mistake here..) and the title track, “Abandoned”, won first place two weeks in a row right after comeback. But Jay Park’s expression was not 100% satisfied.

“I was definitely concerned about it not appealing to the public. But I thought that this was a chance for me to do what I want and show that nothing else mattered as long as the music was good. I wrote the lyrics for all seven tracks and participated in the composing of six of the tracks. I participated in the album artwork and the music video with detail. I’m satisfied enough with the recognition of my coming back as a singer-songwriter, instead of an idol.”

It is evident that the fandom, which became more unified in this turbulence, took part in his success. In an objective point of view, this is also why his popularity is not continuous, though it is very explosive. However, it is true that critics about Jay Park has met their turning point. Here, his well-made friendships cannot be ignored.

“I hear things like, a guy who used to be an idol changed so suddenly. But it’s apparent that hip-hop and R&B are my music styles. I have been listening to them since I was young and it’s a part of my life. Of course, it helped that friends like dok2 and The Quiett were by my side.”

It is a huge luck for an artist to meet a great partner. If that partner is a friend who knows you well then there’s nothing more to say.

“The priority is to become friends. I’ve met Ne-Yo and Musiq Soulchild. It is significant to meet world-famous musicians but I don’t think that I can make music with them if I can’t become friends with them. To be honest, I didn’t really know Korean hip-hop. I only knew TigerJk. Then I met these friends I became a fan of their music and I wanted to work with them. dok2 and The Quiett are friends like these.”

To Jay Park, official promotions are not more than having fun with his friends. Actually, Jay Park’s activities including club performances with dok2 and other musicians, international tour, performances with AOM, were not done as a marketing strategy or for a specific purpose. They take up a big part of his life.

“There is always only one thing I dream of. I’m not talking about buying a nice car or a nice house. I just want people around me to be happy and live well. I want to enjoy life with my friends, let my parents be worry-free and buy games for my brother that he likes. These are things I can do even without huge success.”

Unlike the goals of his life, he has a big and definite aim about debuting in America. Jay Park limits this time to within two years.

“I am confident, to be honest. I don’t believe that the important thing is choosing which artist to work with, knowing the trend or how to promote. I think it’s the sincerity. I believe I can make people feel my sincerity when I make music in America. I have been listening to pop music since I was little and I know their music. I wrote my first rap in English and I already have a manager to work with me in the States. It is a fact that language is an important factor. It’s true that I need this (language) to communicate my sincerity. Two years; and that’s looking at it long. I think it will be enough.”

We decided not to talk about 2PM. Not only because he already talked about it in many other interviews, but also because he is a musician that looks forward instead thinking about the past.

“As a composer and a producer, I worked on Ukiss and Sori’s new albums, and will also hold a concert. I made a lot of songs already so I think my 2nd album will be done soon. To be honest, I’m a bit annoyed since I have so little time for music because of music filming schedules etc. It’s also a relief that my promotions ended quickly (laughs).”

Jay Park ends activities as a singer and begins acting… filming for “Mr. Idol”

Singer Jay Park, after ending his successful solo promotions, will concentrate on the movie.

Jay Park will end the promotions of his first mini album, Take a Deeper Look, on June 2nd with a goodbye stage on Mnet’s MCountdown.

Following, Jay Park will concentrate on finishing up the filming of the movie, Mr. Idol, as well as the next album and international promotion activities, and will say goodbye to the fans for a some time.

Jay Park faced turbulent years since his expulsion from the boyband 2PM in 2009 but showed a new side of him by writing the lyrics of all tracks and producing six of the seven songs in this mini album.

He also won first place on a music program after a week of comeback and placed first on iTunes charts around the world including Canada and Denmark, soon after the release of the album.

With the end of his promotions approaching, Jay Park said to his fans, “It’s regretful that I have to end promotions earlier than expected but I will be back with better and more mature music; please wait for me” and showed his appreciation to the fans who purchased his album.

Mr. Idol, the movie in which Jay Park is starring in, deals with an agency that gathers troublemakers on the edge of survival to create a “national idol group”, and will be in theatres near the end of the year.

Illionaire’s Dok2 & Quiett talk about Jay for HIPHOPLE

Your recent exchanges with Jay Park are a topic of conversation. Even though you collaborated because you recognized him musically, there are a considerable number of people who don’t acknowledge him as a musician. No matter what, he has the image of someone who originated from an idol group.
D: But recently his album Take A Deeper Look came out. I think people started to acknowledge him after listening to that album.
Q: He’s a friend who has to fight many prejudices, I think he’s managing it well.
D: We are very close, so when I see him next to me, there is something I feel bad about. He does really well and has many talents, but people just see him as an “idol.” “A foreign Korean who kinda raps,” that’s all they see him as, but when we look at him, he has a ton of talent. Singing like that, rap, lyrics, punchlines, and dance, as well as his appearance. It’s almost impossible to find a person like that.

If you look at it like that, if Jay Park wasn’t in Sidus, do you feel he would definitely be an Illionaire member?
Q: Seeing as that friend is a world K-pop star… we aren’t able to handle him.
D: Even though we are greedy too, it wouldn’t be right to bring him on.

You briefly mentioned this before, but Jay Park must have suffered a lot in the meantime because of “prejudice” and such.
Q: Jay is very “cool.” He doesn’t say more offensive things, he looks good by overcoming it with hard work.

Curious about Jay Park’s daily life? “My drinking habits are…”

We wheedled out little never-before-told stories from singer Jay Park.

He honestly and simply told us about his first minialbum Take A Deeper Look, the daily life of 25 year-old Jay Park, and the men(?) who surround him.

Take A Deeper Look and Live Performances

▶ Your birthday is April 25th (4/25) and the “Abandoned” music video’s running time is 4 minutes and 25 seconds: are these connected?
There’s no meaning. It just happened by accident. I guess it’s fate.

▶ Which songs from your album do you plan to film music videos for?
There’ll probably be music videos for five of the songs. Three have been shot already (“Abandoned”. “Tonight”, & “Level1000″), two more are scheduled. Because the feeling from all the songs are different, I want to show my diversity.

▶ What about live performances for the other songs?
I sang “Can’t Be Without You” live on the radio, but since it had been so long since I did a broadcast, I wasn’t used to monitoring myself. I couldn’t hear how well I was singing, and I was so nervous that I didn’t sing it properly. I was confident I could sing “Can’t Be Without You” better than anything else, so I was disappointed and upset. Even though I monitored everything on (TV) programs, I didn’t for radio. If I heard what I sang on the radio again, I don’t think I could sleep for two years.

Even I can’t remember my drinking habits

▶ Your drinking habits?
I used to not touch alcohol, but I’ve increased my drinking a lot. Even though I don’t drink enough to be drunk, there was just one time I was really drunk. I don’t remember it well, but the hyungs I drank with shot a video and showed it to me. (laughs) Even though I didn’t do anything weird, it was really funny.

I get droopy when I drink so I often put one arm on the table and rest my head on it. When the hyungs called my name “Jay!”, I left my head where it was and was giving a v-sign or lifting one finger up with the other hand to tell them to wait for a moment. It was really embarrassing and humiliating.

▶ Foods you like?
I like Mexican food, there’s a place I frequent. I also like beef-rib stew and rice noodles.

▶ What’s your everyday fashion?
I’ve worn the same clothes for kind of a long time, I can’t be bothered to change what I wear and all. When it’s okay, I also wear glasses and earrings a lot.

Jay Park’s men

▶ Janghyuk, actor from the same management company who you got close with after shooting a magazine spread; Dok2, who you’re doing “Abandoned” promotions with; your own b-boy team AOM; your manager; your male fans; and even your pet dog Peatry: who are they all to you?

Janghyuk – I totally love Janghyuk hyung. He’s really cool. I haven’t seen many men like him. He’s a genuine man.

Dok2 – Dok2 is family. We always play together and work on music together. He’s also a friend who writes lyrics well and is really good at music. His tastes in music match mine well. It’s due to Dok2 that the “Abandoned” performances look even cooler.

AOM – AOM is also like family. The members used to practice separately, but after I left for Seattle, we started to practice in a group. One of us would call and say, “We have a performance, so we have to prepare,” and we’d all gather and practice together. Especially Junior, when I go home, he practically lives with me. Also I used to not know (Daniel) Jerome that well. He’s the only one from our team who’s choreographed and stood on stage with me. He’s a fun friend who I became closer with after he served as my backdancer.

Manager – I think my manager is good-looking and the best. He does whatever I want to do, knows how to take care of me, and looks after me well.

Male fans – I’m so surprised when I see them at fansigns sometimes. But I like it. Like how I felt Usher looked so cool when I was young, it’s really an honor if they see me like that.

Peatry – Even if he’s seven in human years, technically he’s like an ajusshi (*middle-aged man) in dog years. In two years, he’s going to be a grandpa. Even though he’s a Daschund, his legs are longer than other doggies, and his eyes droop and look sad. He really looks cute. My former dog was a Maltese, but it had a bad personality and bit me a lot. Peatry is different from that doggy. He suits me well and is my kind (of dog).
